ABBOTSFORD ISSUES

Minister Fast in India

As the Minister responsible for expanding Canada's trade relationships around the world, I am proud of our Conservative government's many trade accomplishments over the last five years. Since 2006, we have signed free trade agreements with eight countries, including Peru, Colombia, Jordan, Panama and the European Free Trade Association. Just as importantly, we are presently in negotiations with some 50 other countries, including India, South Korea and the 27 European Union countries.

With a new focus on growing and emerging markets, Canada has become a leader in the field of international trade. We are committed to furthering Canada’s strategic advantage as an attractive and safe investment environment. Not only do our trade agreements enhance Canada’s prosperity and financial security, they also foster progress in the life sciences, agriculture, high technology, construction, green energy, transportation and infrastructure development.

Our Conservative government appreciates the vital importance of trade to Canadian families. Unlike other political parties, our Conservative government recognizes that trade is a "kitchen table" issue. Canadians intuitively understand how critical expanded trade relationships are to our ability to put food on the table, afford decent housing, pay for our children's education, and save for retirement. Indeed, one in five Canadian jobs is directly or indirectly related to trade and to exports, and trade represents close to 60% of our Gross Domestic Product. In order to protect and strengthen the financial security of hard-working Canadians and their businesses, we will continue to pursue a low-tax plan that focuses on trade and creates jobs.

Our goal is to expand our trading relationships only in ways that serve the best long-term interests of Canadians. To that end, we seek out and negotiate trade agreements that are fair and balanced and represent a "win-win" for both parties.

When Canadian companies succeed globally, such success translates into job expansion and prosperity at home. Trade increases wealth, competitiveness and employment opportunities, and delivers tangible benefits for Canadian families. Expanded trade opportunities also create more choice for consumers, competition in the marketplace, and lower prices for Canadians.

Canada has been and continues to be one of the great trading nations of the world. Our Conservative government will continue to build on that strength and ensure Canada's long term prosperity.
